For those of you with IAA using XP and getting BSOD events (STOPS)
citing IdeChnDr.sys at various times please be aware that Intel
support has acknowledged that their IAA package does not properly
handle persistent read errors on an HDU and will BSOD as a result.

Intel's recommendation, short of buying a new drive, is to uninstall
IAA and use the native Microsoft drivers, which do handle persistent
read errors properly. This is what I have done successfully.

Of course (Catch 22) you need to get the hotfix from Microsoft
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B817472)
if you want to maintain MWDMA or UDMA at any level on the drive(s).

Intel did not say if they were intending to fix this shortcoming in
IAA, and I did not ask.

Sucks really.

Fred.
