Hi,
I recently installed Windows XP Professional Service Pack
1 on my P4 based desktop computer. I've found that it has
dramatically slowed down my computer and cannot uninstall
it because I did not archive on installation.
I heard the fix will come on SP2... which is due in 2004.
Is there an alternative solution???????

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q815411
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

Mr Jones,
I do not have any Viruses, I already am running Ad-AWare,
do not use Kazzaa and I believe the problem relates to a
Microsoft patch Q811493. Do you think that maybe this is
the problem ?

811493 installed before 28 May 2003 had problems.
If you installed 811493 before then, reinstall it.
If you have installed 811493 after that date, the cause is probably
something else.
