After logging on, windows XP Pro does not "finish" the
start-up and leaves me with just my desktop wallpaper
image - no icons, shortcuts, start button, task bar,
etc. - I have to use the task manager (ctl-alt-del) to
launch any programs. Most programs begin alright, but not
all ,(windows explorer will not run). Any help would be
greatly appreciated. I have gone so far as to re-install
Windows XPpro and still have the same problem - an
uncompleted desktop build. (I do know that this problem
is not due to "hiding" the task bar or "show" desktop
items), I cannot right-click anything at the
desktop. ???!!!???
Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Mike.

what happens when you run explorer.exe as a new task in task manager?

Nothing! It won't run at all when I try to run it from
the task manager. Either through browsing to it in the
Windows folder, or just typing it in the command line in
task manager.
