Clearing documents - freezes up

Windows XP: When clearing documents via the taskbar
settings, the windows to clear documents freezes, I have
to "End Now" and wait several minutes for desktop and
taskbar to reappear. System restore has not resolved
the problem.

The terms "clearing documents" is not clear... or at least I've never
heard of this in context of a taskbar. Can you please elaborate a bit more?

Start...Settings...Taskbar and Start Menu... (I use
windows classic)...customize..."clear". When I click on
the "clear box" it freezes and I get the "End Now" popup.

Sorry, I don't use Windows Classic... and I can't find equiv on normal
XP interface in order to help you. Perhaps someone else can help.

Perhaps one of the files is corrupt. Try right clicking on any program name
(after clicking start) then select 'remove from list'.

All of the files you see in that list are contained in the C:\Documents and
Settings\<your user name>\My Recent Documents folder. If one of these
shortcuts is corrupted it could be a problem.

Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer) and navigate to that folder. Select
small blocks of these files and press the DEL key until they are gone.

The option in the XP Start Menu is: Right click the Start menu and select
Properties/Start Menu tab/Advanced tab. At the bottom of that dialog under
the Recent Documents section.
