I updated my machine to XP from win98. That installation
went smoothly. Recently, I have had problems with the
computer freezing up during use (it does not respond to
the keyboard, mouse, or ctrl+alt+del to try to check the
system manager or restart). I downloaded the XP service
pack 1 from Microsoft Updates successfully. During the
service pack installation, the machine froze again and my
only option was to do a hard restart. Now, when it tries
to boot up, it does the hardware check and starts loading
XP, but when the time comes for the desktop to appear, the
maching restarts. I tried starting in safe mode, but that
didn't work either. It's almost as if XP is only partly
loaded now.
Is there anything I can do to remedy this? Do I need to
purchase a new drive? Can I save my data and family
pictures or are they lost?
