Hi,

Is this a recognised problem? Apparently certain programs cause ntvdm to
take up 100% cpu.

In my case running codeview (cv.exe) in the microsoft assembler package.

Wanna test if you have the same problem? I believe it is released free.
Download from : http://www.ee.bilkent.edu.tr/~ee212/lab/cv.zip

I dont find any knowledge base article about this problem about Windows XP.

help?

ok, found it!

Randall, its not the same problem. You are taking about an overrall / random
spu usage load.
My problem is related to a certain program.

Eventhough I have had the problem you are talking about and fixed it. For a
month ago I installed
things with windows update, lots of things, drivers and stuff. and after
that constantly 100%
usage. The comp where on its knees with no apps running. and I tried
everything I could, like
booting with no apps, uninstalling drivers etc etc... what helped me was 2
things: bios and system recovery.

See you have a problem with your XP Cd if reinstalling XP hsnt worked for
you. I knew it
worked earlier so I started comp with fail safe settings, and then backed
the comp to earlier date,
new drivers and programs vanished, it started working again. I dont know if
I ever will use
windows update again....

if so I will be very careful..

I can get the 100% cpu usage either running heavy dos programs or Excel.
I have a text file that is almost 500,000 lines long. After breaking
it up it takes several minutes at full power in Excel to import each
worksheet. In DOS I am filtering text files of up to 1GB in size.
I don't think the problem is with XP, but with the program needing a lot
of computing power.

How about if you run it on your comp? (its not a hoax, It is really a
microsoft program)
You get 100% cpu? It is like that as soon as it starts. How much power does
an old
program need?

Anton, if codeview is a dos program try www.tamedos.com and download the
trial version it reduces cpu usage of ntvdm with dos progs.
