Background Programs / Performance

How do I close background programs to speed up the
performance on my computer? Because, I have a 2.6 P4
with 512 MB of ram. But, I have a lot of programs.

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm . I recomend reading
through it all, as not to turn off something required.
