I searched but didn't find a similar problem posted. XP
Home, Dell 8200 - Upon rebooting, chkdsk/f gets 55%
through the first step then reboots the computer. It
never gets past there and the only way to boot the OS is
to hit a key and bypass the chkdsk at startup. It's
stuck in a loop.

This is normal on Dell computers. You can call Dell customer service and
they will tell you that buying Dell was your mistake. That much is true, but
you aren't being charged by reading it here.

Try booting your Dell in safe mode w/ command prompt. Try chkdsk there. If
you have Norton you can try booting from the Noton CD and using the
utilities there. Also if you can figure out which POS drive Dell slapped
into your crate, you could go to the manufacturer's web site and get HDD
utils from them.

As a last resort or if you are feeling really bored, you can call Dell
customer service. You should do this when you have a few days clear to be
listening to hold music. A speakerphone helps a little. Eventually they will
tranfer you to software customer service where they will ask for a credit
card and your first born so they they can conveniently forget you exist or
tranfer you to a non working number. More likely they will send you to
Microsoft and tell you that it was your mistake for using Microsoft. They
also might find opportunity to let you know when they are being released
from prison and try to setup a date.

You didn't state any system messages you got, but I bet one of them
had something to do with a Norton Disk Doctor or chkdsk report of bad
"security descriptors", and you probably were trying to check an NTFS
volume.

You may find this discussion helpful:
http://www.webspiffy.com/archives/2002/08/ntfs_file_system_glitch.php

Somewhere in there you may find your particular variant of this
problem. This seems to be a problem involving an incompatibility
between chkdsk (which is actually what NDD is running for you) and
NTFS, not anything specific to Dell machines.

Good luck!
