will not play

i dont know if i am doimg anything wrong but when i download any movies in an
avi format windows media player wont play it. i have downloaded and instaled
the codecs codes but they dont seem to be working. can somebody help me
before i destroy my computer.

also, how do i change the format ( avi, wmv,wma ect....) to burn onto cd or
dvd to play in my dvd player?

a) Do not install codec packs.... instead install the correct codecs for
the AVI files in question. You can find out what they are by downloading
and installing G-Spot Codec Identifier.... http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

b) To burn a DVD or VCD requires additional software. Roxio
(www.roxio.com) and Nero (www.nero.com) are perhaps the most commonly used
packages. You do not change the format, the third party software reencodes
the file and then burns the DVD.
