When I try to boot in Safe Mode, it hangs on Mup.sys. I've tried all sorts of
solutions from the net but none solved the problem, including running Dell
diagnostics on the hardware. The only thing I've not done is reformat and
re-install XP Pro which I'm trying to avoid.

How long have you waited? Windows XP has a tendancy to actually be doing a
checkdisk as it sits on that last file. Is there hard drive activity while
it "seems to be hung"? If the above mentioned does not apply, have you
tried doing a "Last known good configuration" boot from the start menu? Also
you could do a "bootlog", and review the log from Normol Startup mode after
attempting the Safe mode start. The log should tell you where Windows is
stalling.

For an hour or more. I've tried also doing the "last known good
configuration" with the same results. Safe mode hung on AGP440.sys orginally.
I disabled AGP440 (following instructions from Microsoft) but now it hangs on
Mup.sys.

Thanks.

Thanks. I downloaded the latest Dell 8300 firmware and flashed the Bios.
Still the same problem.
