My recycle bin has just recently started emptying of its own accord. I have
run tests and even when there are just a couple of items amounting to a few
hundred KB's, after an hour or so the bin is emptied automatically. I
recently ran a Disk Cleanup but other than this I can't think of anything I
may have done. Any suggestions?

is disk cleanup a scheduled task?
If so, how often is it run?

Check the properties on the recycle bin to make sure it is not set to delete
items without holding them untill you empty it yourself...ed

Person says recycle bin "holds items for an hour".
I see nothing in recycle bin properties that you imply.
Only thing it says, is "remove files immediately when deleted".
