Hoo boy, you should save your data. Been there done that.
Grinding, grating or clunking from the HDD can only mean
one thing! It will fail soon or corrupt your data. It may
be developing bad sectors. I would run a disk check app
to see what is up, or if the manufacturer of you r drive
offers one. Maxtor and Fujitsu have drive checking utils.
