Suspected registry problem?

I am having problems with Windows XP Home after installing
Norton or McAfee Antivirus. I have been told that AOL
program can cause problems in the registry. I am not sure
what that means, but I remember when MS had a registry
clean program/utility. Is such a program/utility
available? If not what can be done? Do I need to do a
complete system restore and put AOL in after UI install a
antivirus program?
