Hi Dick,
System Restore in WindowsXP was not designed as a backup tool!

To create a restore point, Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System
Tools | System Restore. Note that you have to be logged on as an
admistrator.
However, note that a restore point is *not* a backup. System Restore is not
a tool for backing up your computer. It backs up critical system files only,
and does nothing, for example, to back up your data files.
System Restore is a useful tool for restoring your operating system to the
state it was yesterday or a few days ago, if something accidentally gets
screwed up. That's all it is.

on the General tab, Launch System Restore
