Login password fails for Safemode bootup

Does Safemode store separate user accounts than are found in a normal
bootup? The reason why I ask is because a laptop that I'm servicing will not
accept the user's login password in order to complete the bootup. The
administrator password is unknown.

Hi,

No, no different accounts are created for Safe mode. Check capslock/numlock,
as they are still case sensitive. The administrator account in WinXP Home
would not have a password unless the end user created one on purpose.

Rick, I just got it to boot via Safemode. There were two Safemode choices: a
regular one and another one (Safemode With Networking). I couldn't log into
the former, but was able to log in to the latter using the user's name and
password along with the default domain name of the user's employer.

Although the same username appears as a default for both of the Safemodes,
apparently the laptop was never configured for personal use.

Normally it is booted via the classic login box, which includes a field for
choice of domains. However, it has always been able to boot even if its
network cable is disconnected.

The laptop can be operated as a standalone computer, but always must be
logged into as if it were to function as a client in a domain.

Hi,

See if the listing of domains includes an option to logon to the local
machine. Otherwise, check with the network admin for password issues.
