I'd like to have a simple performance monitor on screen that
will display a wireless network adapter speed at the moment
and possibly an average, running on XPpro SP2. Windows Task
Manager > Networking, MMC Performance, and Wireless Network
Connection Status all use too much real estate on the
1280x1024 screen. Is there a small-footprint third party
monitor available for download?

I have been using NetMeter for the past 3 months. It is free. There is
nothing "included" to damage your system or spy on you. It is a beta
program, but it is very stable. Go here to get it:

Good luck!
