I have configured a Backup to run in NTBackup. It worked for a while and now
I am getting an error. Nothing has been installed or reconfigured. I tried
to rename the old backup and try it again, but no such luck. I am backing up
across the network to a Linux Server with Samba running. I have probably 15
users currently backing up to this Linux box without any problems.

The error is as follows:

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4
Aborting Backup.
------------------------
The operation did not successfully complete.
------------------------

I checked and the user has around 40 GB of free HD space. Like I stated
earlier it was working and is now failing.

From a google search, the first hit is this one. Though it names
Server 2003, it might have something in there for your problem.

Error 800423f4 appears in the backup log file when you back up a volume
by using the Volume Shadow Copy service in Windows Server 2003

I couldn't get anything to work, so I put in the Windows XP Pro CD and ran a
repair. That seemed to fix the problem, only now I can't schedule the backup
to run. It always asks me if I want to start the schedular service. I say
yes to start the service, but nothing happens. I have sp2 installed on the
PC.

Thank in advance for your help

Go to Start | Run. Type in services.msc, click Ok. In the services
console scroll down to the Task Scheduler service. Is the status
"started" and start up type "Automatic"?
