My sound theme stopped working on windows XP Home edition.
When the computer starts up & shuts down, the sounds do
not play. The sounds are still there when I check sounds
in control panel, and the theme is still selected, they
just don't play. This has not affected sounds in other
programs, they work fine. Any suggestions?

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't
have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double
click (Default) and delete it.
If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.
Note you can save the registry key first by:
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type SaveKey, and then click Save.
Or create a system restore point prior to editing.
Note: If the registry key is not there, you can simply create one by going
edit > new.
