View Full Version : Windows XP Service Pack 1a

If my computer is set up to automatically notify me of
windows updates and I've downloaded each update that I've
been notified of, do I still need to install "Windows XP
Service Pack 1a"? I didn't think I did, but I sent an
error report which lead me to the "Windows XP Service Pack
1a" to fix the problem.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my question!

SP1 and SP1a are identical, except for the fact Microsoft
removed their Virtual Machine for Java from SP1a in order
to comply with a recent court ruling regarding litigation
with SunMicroSystems involving Java.

Sorry I'm such a computer illiterate, but does that mean
that when I get my auctomatic windows undates that all
those fixes are what's in the SP1 service pack? If so,
why did I need to send an error report for a problem that
I should have already downloaded a fix for?
Thanks again!

If you have SP1 installed, then subsequent updates, from Windows Update,
are to update your computer with files released after SP1 was released.

Thanks Nicholas! Hopefully this will be my last
question. How do I know if I have SP1 installed on my
computer? Where do I look?
Thanks again!

Okay, I see nothing that says SP1. It says "Microsoft
Windows XP, Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpclnt_qfe.021108-
2107". I'm assuming that means that I don't have SP1
installed and that I should install it. If you tell me
I'm correct I won't need to bother you anymore.
Thanks for all your help!

If there is no mention of SP1, then you'll need to install it.
You can install by going to the Windows Update website
or you can download it and then install it.
Windows XP Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default=
..asp
Note: Select "Network Installation" Download (32-bit version)
Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm and scroll way
down to "SP1 - Before Installing - Alex Nichol MVP.
