need a file : kernel32.dll for xp

need a copy of kernel32.dll for xp
the "restore disk" supplied with my system does not have it
searched the web for a bit but found nothing for xp
is there anywhere i can get a copy?

My computer shows kernel32.dll at both c:\windows\system32 and
c:\windows\system32\dllcache.

Suggest that you run Find broadening the search to hidden and system
files to see if you have a spare copy already on hand.

What happened to the original copy of kernel32.dll?

System File Protection in Windows XP should have prevented the file
from being deleted.

Look in the \Windows\i386 folder for it, or in the
\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder if you have Service Pack 1
installed.

Also look for a file named Kernel32.DL_ as that would be the
compressed version of the file which could be decompressed and used.

MY WINDOWS XP WONT BOOT SO I AM TRYING TO REPLACE THE
KERNEL32.DLL AS A SUGGESTED FIX... THE FIX SUGGEST TO USE
THE XP INSTALL DISK ,WHICH I DO NOT HAVE

Thank you for providing the additional detail.

Is your hard drive NTFS or FAT32?

It will be difficult to install a new copy of the file onto the hard
drive if it is NTFS. Did your FIX suggest how to copy the
replacement file to an NTFS drive?

If the drive is FAT32 then just boot the computer with a Windows 98
Startup Disk (get one from www.bootdisk.com) and when it has finished
booting up enter the following command:

DIR C:\KERNEL32.DLL /S /P

That will locate the file and tell you were it is. You can then copy
the file from that location to c:\windows\system32
