View Full Version : Slow right click menus

I have two computers networked both on XP professional. I
have a problem whereby certain functions such as opening
files and bringing up a menu when right clicking files in
explorer or on the desktop are much slower when my LAN
connection is enabled. For example If I right click an
Excel file it can take up to 5 secs to bring up a menu,
it should be instant.
This only occurs on one of the computers (which is
virtually new). If I disable the connection the problem
disappears. Any know what might be causing this ?

I've experienced the same problem, only the delays were much worse.
I suspect that your first computer is networking to your second
computer every time your right click or double click in Explorer.
In my case, packet sniffing the network revealed that the first
computer was sending packets to the second computer on every
right-click or double-click in Explorer.
Included in some of the packets was a reference to an obsolete file
extension.
Searching the Registry revealed some left over file type associations
on the first machine that pointed to a program on the second machine.
Although these associations were present in the registry, they did not
show up on the File Types tab of Windows Explorer.
Deleting these associations from the registry and rebooting the
computer cleared up this problem for me. Right-clicking a file name
in Windows Explorer now brings up the menu immediately, and
double-clicking a file name in Windows Explorer now launches the
program associated with that file type in a time frame consistent with
simply launching the program without specifying a file name.
I wouldn't proceed unless you are comfortable with using Regedit.
Good luck!
