View Full Version : What to do about Warning???

Had this computer for two weeks, and occasionally at start up the blue
screen comes on with "WARNING: Immediately back up data and replace
hard drive, (some awful thing) may be imminent." Is there anything I
can do to about this other than replacing a brand new hard drive? I
tried to find information on web sites about this to no avail.

Tried backing up data to the CD drive, it says it's happening, but
when I go to check nothing is on the CD.

That sounds very much like a S.M.A.R.T. failure prediction which is telling
you that your HDD is on the way out.
I would do as it says, get a new HDD & image over to it pretty quickly
before the old one fails completely and you lose everything.

Re. your inability to burn to your CD-Drive, that sounds like an unrelated
problem.

Geez, I was hoping it didn't mean what it said! Okay, I'm at it.
Brand new computer! Thanks!

If it was purchased from a reputable retailer, it SHOULD have a 30-day
warranty at the very minimum. I'd huff the thing back and have them handle
this.

Well, have a quick chat to who-ever you bought it from. All HDDs have a 1
year warranty, for an extra premium, 3 years.

Before you send it back, contact them and maybe they can tell you what
is wrong. You need to contact them anyway to send it back. :)

This sounds almost identical to the S.M.A.R.T. disk protection. This means
that your hard drive is about to *physically* fail. I would keep your
computer off, *not standby*, until you get a new hard drive. Until you're
ready to copy your hard drive (that's a different matter), DO NOT use your
computer unless its absolutely nessisary, because that means that your hard
drive could fail at any minute. So if your not using your computer right
now for any thing that is absolutely nessicary, SHUT IT OFF RIGHT NOW, go
out, get a new hard drive, and copy your data over to the new hard drive.
