View Full Version : accessing documents in "My Documents"

Hi,

I have two machines at home, both running Windows XP. One of the machines
just died - I called the hardware vendor's tech support - and they are
sending me a new motherboard - which will take about 10 business days.

In the meantime, I want to access data on the harddrive of the dead machine.
I installed the harddrive as a slave harddrive in the working machine. I'm
able to access all folders in the harddrive, except for the "My documents"
folder, which I had setup to be private and non-shared among users. When I
try to access that folder from my current working machine, I get the error
message "Access is denied". I know the username and password associated
with the user whose "My Documents" folder I am trying to access. Is there
any way I can access that folder?

On a side note, if I make the harddrive of my dead machine as the master
drive of my working machine, what are the consequences? The two machines
have radically different hardware (one was purchased recently, and one back
in 1998) - will XP boot properly given that all the hardware has changed?
Will there be any problems with the XP licensing given that the hardware has
totally changed? Once my dead machine is alive again, will I have a problem
putting this harddrive back in there as the master drive if I try to make it
the master drive of my current working machine?

Thanks in advance,
Arvind.
