downloading attachments

I would really appreciate your help. I have minimal
computer knowledge. I was using the clipboard 2 days
ago, copying clip art to clipboard and inserting from
clipboard. After that I was going to several web pages
looking for information. Finally, that day I checked my
bosses email as I do periodically throughout the day,
clicked on the download, opened it and instead of the
document appearing, my clipboard and its contents did. I
tried to reboot the computer, I also did a "restore" to
Sunday's settings. Neither has corrected the problem. I
need to get rid of the clipboard and have the attachments
open in the correct programs, either word or excel.
Please advise. I need these attachments.
