i used to have a freeware programme which could be used to find the codec
used to create a video or audio file.i am running xp pro with sp2. the logo
of the programme was like a cats face.not unlike napster.you could drag and
drop a audio/video file into it and it would tell you what was used to
create the file. can anyone tell me the name of it or any similar programme

Sherlock just tells you what codecs are installed and whether properly so; it
does not have the facility that GSpot has of seeing what codecs a given file
needs.

Video Inspector is one I use :http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?vtb

It also has great feature showing if codec that was used to cereate
file is installed on your system or not and has button which allows to
download needed codec. And it's free!
