windows freezes on blue logo screen

I can not get my XP Home edition to boot. It freezes on
the blue screen with the Windows XP logo. I have tried to
boot into Safe mode, Safe mode with command prompt, and
most of the other choices, and I never get past that same
frozen screen. I have access to another computer using
the same operating system if there are any files I should
copy from it to put on the non-booting computer. I do NOT
want to have to reinstall XP and lose all my data by the
required reformat.
Any ideas?
