While searching the Events of the system, and pin-pointing
the time that I remember first having this particular
group of problems, I found this to be the Description:
File Replacement was atttempted on the Protected System
file c:\windows\system32\pubpm.vbs This file was restored
to the original version to maintain system stability. the
file version of the bad file is 0.0.0.1, the version of
the system file is 0.0.0.1.
Somewhere around that event time is when I returned home
with a hand held device that synchronized to my desk
computer. I had been away with a laptop and the hand held
synchronizing. Upon synchronizing, I immmediately noticed
OLD problems flashing across the screen and far too many
items needing syncing. It was like something triggered an
old problem that I had corrected yrs ago on the 98 2nd
edition. Upgrading to XP has been ok with patches and
things. However, whatever this reverting back to the
original (?)(98 2nd edition?) has done has caused me to
loose something that was needed to run windows and Quick
Books Pro correctly - which I need back immediately!! I
have tried reinstalling both XP (upgrade) and 2003 QBP as
instructed on screen in the trying to fix the windows File
Protection message. Nothing, updates, etc is fixing it!!
It keeps returning me to the CD to install XP again. I'm
lost!! I think it is steming from Outlook 2000, Active
Sync, and 98 2nd edition all synchronizing weird in the
past that kicked off something in XP upgrade. It was fine
on the lap top original version XP that I was syncing with
while I was away.

Do you know what that pubpm.vbs is and which application it is
associated with?

A Google search fails to yield a single reference to any such file.

You may have a virus on your system. Make sure your antivirus
definitions are completely up to date and do a full scan of your hard
drive.

Good luck
