Windows XP hangs on shutdown

windows hangs on shutdown and restart about 90% of the
time. The patch listed in the download patch now box is
not in the list that this button leads to.
I am running win XP I recieved for atttending a microsoft
developers training. I have an ecs K7s5a pro mobo,Maxtor
120gb ultra ata hard drive,a single stick of kbyte 512
ddr,
