View Full Version : Screen refresh rate
John
January 1st 06, 01:28 AM
Because of a previous problem it was suggested that I change the size of my
screen resolution, which I did.
It was also suggested that I change the "Screen refresh rate" if the screen
starts to flicker. I don't get a choice to change the rate as I only have
have one choice under the Monitor tab, which is " Use hardware default
setting".
The flickering is not a constant problem, but each time I try to drag a
window display, it is very slow and gives a wobbling effect. Previously I
could drag a display across the screen without any problems.
Any suggestions please.

Is there a box to check or uncheck above or below it?

No Cari, there is only the one choice as previously mentioned. There is an
"Advanced" section but it and everything else is greyed out.
Actually, the whole computer appears to be slower.
There is also a Troubleshoot tab beside the Monitor and that is showing
"Full hardware acceleration" - if that helps.

Yes Cari there is one which is greyed out which says " Hide modes that this
monitor cannot display"

First thing I would do is reinstall your graphics card drivers.... from the
graphics card manufacturer's website.

I like to learn by doing things myself Cari, but I can't identify the
driver's manufacturer. How do I do this?

Let's see what DirectX identifies it as:
Start, Run (type) dxdiag (enter)
You should find out what graphics card or adapter (built in) you have by
letting it go through it's 'collecting information' then clicking on the
Display tab.... Let us know what it says in the Device box.

That's all the infor Cari, I hope it helps. Does ATI ring a bell, because I
deleted it from the startup menu after running "Startup Inspector", only a
short time before these problems started.

Cari, I ran a program called "Everest computer checks" and it has listed
Graphics Processor properties:
Video Adapter Sapphire Radeon 9200 SE
GPU Code Name RV280 (AGP 8x 1002 / 5964, Rev 01)
GPU Clock 200 MHz (original: 200 MHz)
Memory Clock 164 MHz (original: 166 MHz)
Is this what we are looking for?

Cari, I ran a program called "Everest computer checks" and it came back with
the following:
Graphics Processor Properties:
Video Adapter Sapphire Radeon 9200 SE
GPU Code Name RV280 (AGP 8x 1002 / 5964, Rev 01)

Everest has a complete list of the whole computer if there is anything else
you may need.

Yes.... you have an ATI graphics card!
As Graham has already posted, visit the ATI website and download and install
the latest drivers for your card.

My problems are still not over. Now i know what has happened.
After running Startup Inspector for the first time, the program responded by
saying that ATI was not necessary at startup. So I removed it from startup
and then went and removed it from the system using "Add/remove programs". Now
I don't know how to reinstall as when I do a search for ATI, a heap of files
are listed.
I went to the website as suggested by Graham and there are three parts to
the download, the second being from the original install disk which I do not
have, as the computer came with ATI installed. I cannot get past this point
to download an upgrade.
I advised ATI of my problem and sent a copy of the Everest report which
showed that ATI was my graphics card but they didn't reply to my email as
promised.
Now I am stuck in which direction to go next. Any suggestions please.

I will try them again and let you know.
All the ATI software is still on the computer, all I need to know is which
..exe file I need to open to reinstall.
I'll see if they can at least give me that info and i will let you know
Graham.

If you have all the files there then I should imagine you should be able to
find a setup.exe.
Otherwise, run system restore make a restore point and try each .exe in
turn, starting with those that look most likely.

I have sent another email to ATI, awaiting their response.
I will also follow up on your suggestions Graham, but I have run one setup
program and it couldn't find the driver. Your suggestion is going to take
time which I don't have right now as I have to go away for a couple of days.
Please don't give up on me just yet as i will get back to you on my return.
Thank you.

Hi Graham,
The problem is solved at last. Because i don't have the original
installation disk I had to physically take the card out, record the serial
and part number, register the card and then I was able to completely remove
all previous files before downloading and installing the latest.
All is good and thank you for your assistance.
Cari, if you are still following this drama - thank you as well.
Regards
