Christian,

The following info is what I got from a tech from E-
Machines. Please try it and see if it worked for you!:

The best way to speed up your system is to run a variety
of system utilities.
The first thing you should do is clear up your system
resources.

To free up system resources:

Please click on Start
Click on Run
Type in msconfig and hit enter
Click on the TAB marked Startup
Uncheck everything EXCEPT for your anti-virus software,
if you have added that, and BigFix, if applicable.
Click Apply and OK
Restart your system

It is then a good idea to run Disk Cleanup and Disk
Defragmenter. It is best to run these in Safe Mode.
To get into Safe Mode, hold down the LEFT CONTROL KEY
when you see the eMachines logo at startup until you get
the Windows startup menu. When you get the startup menu
choose Safe Mode. And then choose Windows XP and press
enter when it asks for your Operating System. An
alternative method is to tap the F8 key while the system
is restarting.
To run Disk Cleanup

Go to the Start Menu
Go to All Programs
Go to Accesories
Go to System Tools
Click on Disk Cleanup
Select your C: Drive and press okay
You will want to have all of the boxes checked.
Press Okay (This will remove all files in the Recycle Bin
and you will be unable to retreive them once delted. If
there are any you want in there, please restore them or
uncheck recycle bin.)
Press Yes at the "Are You Sure" screen

To run Disk Defragmenter

Go to the Start Menu
Go to All Programs
Go to Accesories
Go to System Tools
Go to Disk Defragmenter
Select the C: Drive
Press Defragment (The process may take up to two hours.)
After the process is finsished press close.
Adjust for Best Performance:

Click START
Right click on MY COMPUTER and choose PROPERTIES
Click on the ADVANCED tab
Click on the SETTINGS button under the PERFORMANCE. This
will open the PERFORMANCE OPTIONS window.
Place a bullet next to ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE
Recheck the last 4 items in the list
Click APPLY
Click OK
Click OK
Adjust the virtual memory:

Go to Start, Settings and then the Control Panel.
Double Click on the System icon, this will bring you to
System Properties.
Go to the advanced tab.
Click on Settings under Performance.
Then click on the Change button under Virtual Memory.
This is where you can set the Virtual Memory. Change the
MIN to 750 and the MAX 1500
Click SET
After you have set it, close all applications and restart
the computer.
Run the CHKDSK utility:

Click START
Click RUN
Type CMD and press ENTER on the keyboard
From the command prompt type CHKDSK /R
Press ENTER on the keyboard
A message will appear that asks if you want to run the
utility at the next startup. Say YES to this message. To
do so type Y and hit ENTER on the keyboard.
Restart the computer and allow the utility to run.

This will boot the system into normal mode. Your system
should now run much quicker
