can't open any files

I have a real problem....when downloading, I go to open
and it does the internet shortcut thing and I can't open
the file, or I just can't open it at all. I have tried
downloading and getting yahoo messenger 3 times and I
can't. Can you please help me with this bothersome
problem??? I really want the messenger. And I really
want that shortcut thing to go away so it makes my file
life easier. Thank you.
