Does anyone know if it is possible to retrieve old data
from a reformatted hard drive?

Hi
Yes, you can retrieve data from a reformatted disk, but it may not be =
cheap and can be very difficult:

Yes, but it's frequently not trivial, and also can be expensive. Look up
"data recovery services" in the yellow pages or Google, for your area.
A client recently used the services of one of these firms to recover data
from a failed disk. Almost the entire contents were recovered, service was
prompt, but the bill was about CDN$3000.
If you're lucky the OnTrack utilities may be able to recover data for you
for somewhat less than that, though they are still not cheap.
