View Full Version : Selecting NO PAGING FILE in virtual memory settings

ok.. If I tell it to not have a paging file in the
virtual memory settings, and then I reboot, it says I
still have a paging file.

the paging file is equal to the size of the RAM I have.

My question, is this -

Since it is equal to the size of ram I have and limited
to that size, would it be accurate to say that my paging
file "resides" in RAM now?

Windows XP requires the use of a Page File to function properly.

Thank you for the link.

that still doesn't really answer my question though..

If I select "no paging file" in my virtual memory
settings, would it be safe to say that my paging file
exists in RAM?

Page files do not exist in RAM. You can utilize RAM for virtual memory
needs when it is required, but turning off your Page File (Virtual =
Memory)
completely will cause errors because XP looks for a Page File when =
programs
require it.

The temptation is always great when you have a RAM packed machine=20
to totally eliminate the page file. Don't do it. By design, some =
components=20
in Windows XP require the presence of a page file, even if they never =
use=20
it for its intended purpose. You'll likely receive out of memory type =
errors if=20
you eliminate all page files. Feel free to set the page file to the =
required=20
minimum (2MB) if you have sufficient RAM, secure in the knowledge that=20
XP won't access the page file unless it's absolutely needed, but again
- don't eliminate it totally.
