2 messengers running at once

One version came with my OEM version of XP. I have consistently upgraded MSN
since the first installation, currently at 7.5. However, when I don't log in
to 7.5, I am apparently logged in to the older one automatically. People
start chats and the old interface pops up, but I can never locate or start
this older version on my own. It does not show up in add/remove programs,
and the only messenger.exe file on my hard drive is the latest version.

How can I disable the old version and gain control of my online status?

Greetings LB,

The "old" one is actually Windows Messenger, a completely separate product from MSN
Messenger.

You can simply disable Windows Messenger. To do so, open it up (click Start, then
Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this
Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on
version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger
to run in the background' (depending on version).

However, as long as you don't mind losing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard or Application
Sharing within MSN Messenger, you can simply uninstall Windows Messenger by clicking the
Start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

when i go and do this im getting a error message Error in advpack.dll mising
entry:launchinfsection thnaks hope to get this problem fixed also
