scanning with windows xp

How do you open a scanned document in word? My new epson
scanner has
extensions.psf .bmp .tif .pcx .tga .jpg .psf .png .fpx
but "word will only open with different ext.

When you do a scan, you create, in fact, a picture. It can not be opened in
any word program. The saved picture can be imported into the document, but
not changed.

There are programs available that WILL allow you to scan a document and then
work with it. OmniPage Pro is one of them. TextBridge is another.

If you happen to have Office XP, it comes with OCR software. It's pretty
well hidden, but it's there and it works reasonably well.

If you don't have Office XP, you'll need to buy some sort of OCR software
that will convert your picture into text.
