Thomas, I read a thread in a private newsgroup a few months ago where
users were comparing notes. Everyone had a different story to tell: The
red light turned off as expected for some folks. Others said the light
stayed on for x amount of minutes after the system was powered off. Some
had the same experience as your brother where the red lights never
turned off.

There was no rhyme or reason to it. Some were usb. Some ps/2. Some were
on systems that had more advanced settings in BIOS that maintained a low
but steady trickle of power for a faster "on" state. Others had systems
with no fancy power settings.

It would appear that... this is just the way this particular mouse
behaves. Another mouse of the same brand and model may behave
differently. Why? Hardware manufacturing is often sourced out. Company A
makes this month's shipment of mice. Company B makes them for the next
month.

Maybe you will figure out how to get your brother's mouse to behave
eventually but just in case you don't - I thought you might be
interested in the info that was shared in that thread that I read. In
other words, maybe your borther's mouse is working as the design
intended?

Incidentally, I have an Explorer trackball/USB connection. The red
lights stay on if I use standby (S1). I don't use any of the other sleep
states (Deep Sleep, STR, S3, etc). They turn off about 30 seconds after
the system is powered down with Shutdown or Hibernate.

I have the same problem as your brother and was searching a solution
when I came across yours.
I have just upgraded my mother board to MSI 8137C and a 1300 MHZ AMD
processor. Both my Microsoft optical mouse and Microsoft Keyboard
remain on after the Machine shuts off.
