I did not have this problem with WMP v9, but whenever I attempt to play a
video in WMP, all I get is a black screen. I don't know where to start to
look for a solution. I have no problems with other graphics, nor does my
monitor suffer any strange symptoms.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Help will be greatly appreciated.

If they are AVI files, they will probably be compressed with either the DIVX
or XVID codec. To find out which one they are compressed with, download and
install G-Spot Codec Identifier and use it to analyze the movie(s) in
question.

Once you've identified the codec you need, then download and install it.
DIVX will be at www.divx.com and XVID at www.xvid.com
