View Full Version : Cannot start 'Cryptographic Services'

I went to the Administration Tools/services and tried to
start the Cryptographic Services and got the message,

"Could not start the Cryptographic Services on Local Computer.
Error 126: The specified module could not be found."

I have tried to get information on the MSKB but cannot find anything.
What module is it looking for and how do I restore it?

Hi Ivan,

First, let's rename the C:\windows\catroot2 folder to catrootbak. Then, try
to start the service.

If it does not work, check c:\windows\system32\cryptsvc.dll.

The file version should be: 5.1.2600.1190 (Windows XP SP1) Size: 53760 byte.

If you have not load the Windows XP SP1, please load it.

Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!

Sincerely,

Steven Liu

Hello Steven,

Thanks for your help.
The problem was this file:
c:\windows\system32\cryptsvc.dll

It was not there.
I found it here:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
and
C:\WINDOWS\LastGood.Tmp\System32

I don't have any idea how this file can be deleted but obviously this
was the problem.
