XP PRO DISK CLEANUP STALLS

greetings,
attempting to run disk cleanup (cleanmgr.exe), it stalls
at the stage of compress old files. causes windows
explorer to run slowly. searching system32 folder takes
forever.
computer: toshiba te2100e, 1.9gig, 512 ram, xp pro.

Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
