How do I shut off the use of emoticons? I do not want any to show up no
matter what sequence of keys I hit.

Tools, options, the rest depends on your version I expect... Mine it's under
Messages... Click the option to DISABLE emoticons?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have version 7.0(build 7.0.0813). Under
Tools, Options, Message; I can see the item to 'Show Emoticons' but I do not
see any option to disable them. Would a newer version help?

It would but if you untick show emoticons it should stop showing them? (Mind
you that it *should* and that doesn't mean it WILL but it *should* according
to Galen-logic.)

The box was and is unticked. The emoticons still show when certain key
sequences are input. I think I will try a newer version and see if it's any
different. Thanks for your help.

I have downloaded and installed MSN Messenger Version 7.5 (Build 7.5.0322).
When I write a new email message it behaves the same as version 7.0 did; that
is, certain key sequences still display as emoticons. The only box referring
to emoticons in the Tools, Options, Messages options is unticked. It looks
like I get emoticons whether I want them or not. Any suggestions?

I looked in the custom emoticons and can't even delete them. I hate to say
it but maybe an alternative IM client is in order if turning them off
doesn't actually disable them. Are they disabled at both ends of the
conversation?

I had this problem. You need to uncheck the box, click apply - and then
exit MSN straight away. It should then be saved.
