Could not retrieve my mail for 48 earlier in the week.
And now I can't retrieve it for over 24 hours again. I
keep getting following message: page is currently
unavailable - we are sorry etc, please try again later.
Surely the mail system can't be down for the best part of
this week. HELP! Fancy that - since I can't check my
mail. But when I can I might be enlightened and might be
able to take the right action to avoid future problems.

Well.... you shouldn't need email to check back in a newsgroup on a
problem. Pull up the newsgroups again and look for responses to
questions (Hint: the + next to a subject means there's more "notes" in
the conversation).

If you do happen to swing back this way, here's a reply for you: The
"mail page" is not a part of Windows. Email servers are provided by ISPs
or services like hotmail. If the provider's email server is out of
whack, then there's no mail until they straighten them out. If you
continue to have trouble with the mail, contact the email provider for
an explanation and/or for assistance.
