I am using XP Pro - When I select <start> <control panel> <system> <hardware>
<device manager> - I get an error message in a box marked "MMC.EXE" - Windows
can not access the device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the items

I get this even though I am at Administrator Level access?

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi, thanks for that but it hasn't solved the problem. I've looked at other
routes and I can now say that , if I access Device Manager via <Control
Panel>, <Admin Tools>, <Computer Manager> - <Device Manager> - I can see
everything.

I just can't see it via CP, Sys, HW, Device Manager? either as
Administrator or anything else

After reading through some of the other answers in this forum, related to the
topic of lost permissions etc etc. I discovered that my problems was
Zonealarm was blocking certain things from running. I could not access device
manager while usind control panel/system/devices
I could also not access User accounts from the control Panel nor could I
make changes in the sounds and audio devices.

The message was the same that I have seen in several of the threads here

"Windows cannot access the specified devices, path, or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Again, it was my ZoneAlarm fire wall blocking the devices from working.

I do run ZoneAlarm, what action did you have to take to restore control, or
did you just remove ZA?
