Hello,

I have been experimenting with Norton Ghost 9.0. I like it for making an image of a disk, but I don't like the way it requires Microsoft .Net Framework to work as an installed application or that it runs continuously in the background.

I suppose running continuously is would be necessary if you wanted to use it for backups, but in my case I only want to start the application every few weeks or so and make a complete image of my drives.

Ghost doesn't have a executable file that is displayed in the Startup dialog of msconfig. I found a Norton Ghost Service in services, but when I changed that from automatic to manual Ghost still loaded on startup. When I disabled it, I get an annoying message at startup that Ghost couldn't be started because a service is not available.

There must be something set in the registry that tells Ghost to start when the machine is booted up. I would like to somehow disable the automatic startup and simply start Ghost manually when I need it for making an image.

If anyone has figured out a way to do this, I would certainly appreciate seeing your methods.

Thanks.

Greg,

I'm running XP Home and Ghost 9.0. Under Run/MSconfig/Startup in the
MSconfig Utility I have an entry, "Ghost Tray". I keep it disabled,
(unchecked), because I don't want the icon in my taskbar tray and because I
don't want Ghost running all the time. When I want to use Ghost, I just use
Start/Programs/Norton Ghost to start it.

Your method will still load Ghost 9.0, you must stop the Norton Ghost
service.

Control Panel > Administration Tools > Services.

The Icon you are seeing in the notification area is just an shortcut to
launch the application's GUI. You disable Ghost properly by stopping the
service but unfortunately as you found out this does prevent the
notification area icon (Ghost Tray) from loading..

[HKLM\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
Here you will find "Norton Ghost 9.0".

WTC,

You're right. I overlooked that. The service still runs thought, so I set
it to manual.

If I want to Ghost an image I can now use this process:

Use CP>Services to start the service
Use the Start>Programs menu to start Ghost
Copy the image
Close the program
Use CP>Services to stop the service

This way Ghost service only runs during the time I want to use Ghost, not
constantly.

Thanks.

You're welcome Greg. Your process will do just fine and you are correct
about Ghost only runs as a process (PQV2iSvc.exe) when the Ghost service has
started.
