Windows XP Desktop Problems - Can't Remove Status/Info Bar

On last bootup the bar to the left came up for no reason whatsoever as I had
made no system changes not installed/removed any software. See screenshot

How do I get rid of it as I'm a pretty seasoned XP user and have tried
almost everything. I can't select it, move it, change the size or anything.
