View Full Version : Email Programs cannot find POP or SMTP

Katrina

My WinXP Pro system was working fine until the latest update from Microsoft.
Now no email program works - neither Outlook Express nor Mozilla Thunderbird
nor Mozilla suite. All these programs fail to engage my POP3 server when I
try to receive, and fail to engage my SMTP when I try to send. The programs
just whirl around and never accomplish anything.

Web-based email programs, such as Yahoo and mail2web, are fully operative.
My backup WinXP Home computer works fine, and goes through the same router as
the defective Win XP Pro system.

What to try before I reload the OS?

Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and request
assistance in properly setting up your email account.

Have a look on your firewall. This probably close port 110 (for POP3)
and 25 for SMTP

Hi Carey,

I did contact Earthlink about the problem, but it seems that the problem
cannot be on their end because I can get mail on my backup machine.

Any other ideas?

That's because the account information on your backup machine is correct.
The information on the machine in question, is NOT.

Again, contact your ISP and have them walk you through the correct settings,
which you seem to have forgotten. If the account information is incorrect
you will not get e-mail.

Run system restore and restore to a point before you installed the update.

Much thanx, Gilles. I turned-off the firewall and got my mail. I can take it
from here.

Is it a Norton firewall (e.g., NIS or NPF)?

The discussion about the firewall makes much more sense than the repeated
insistance that the account settings were wrong. We are having same type
problem, even excerabated by fact that one compuyer works fine and new
computer keeps returning message about ports 110 and 25. Since teh new
computer had the LATEST AND GREATEST XP verrsion installed, I now suspect
these firewall settings. Hopefully will confirm and resolve this weekend,
thanks to your response here.
