Hi all
My friend has a 850 mhz PC with 256 mgb ram. I don't know what motherboard
he has.
When he tries to install XP Pro everything went ok and was ok for 2 days
then it started acting up ,
He said he had to set his drive to run at ATA 66 , his pc don't support ATA
100 ,
His PC is only 2 years ol , every thing supports ATA 100 now days don't it.
I just can't believe his pc won't support ATA 100.
Can anyone enlighten me on this subject.

That could very well be. Several brand names like Dell, HP and Compaq were
selling ATA-66 drives and motherboards with ATA-66 controllers well into
2001.

It's really the controllers on the motherboard which determine whether
ATA100 is supported or not. Windows XP will support everything from ATA133
to older PIO modes. I'm wondering if the proper IDE chipset drivers have
been installed. Also, is DMA being used ? Check both the Primary and
Secondary IDE channels in the Device Manager to see if DMA has been enabled.
