My son has purchased a laptop and has given me his PC.

It has a 60g hard disk mostly full of music and MP3 players and various juke
boxes.

It has windows xp pro

I would like format the disc to get rid of all his add ons etc.

I have the original XP disc and installation number, is a reformat the same
way as that of Win 98 ?

Also can I use the same activation number or do I contact Microsoft for a
new one

thank you

Dave

Info on doing a clean install is found here

Your son was right to transfer the original XP CD disk and product key to
you. There should be no need to contact Microsoft during activation as your
computer should already be tied to the product key.
Information on Windows Product Activation can be found here
