View Full Version : Make shutdown use standby

I use Media Center edition 2005, and want to stop my family switching the PC
off - I want it to use standby instead. Will they listen?

There are some policy changes/registry hacks that suggest they disable
shutdown - what they actually do is disable the 'turn off' menu so you can't
get to shutdown - or standby or restart. You are left with just the logoff
function.

My ideal would be if XP stored the commands associated with the various
close down functions (eg shutdown, standby etc) in the registry, so that I
could go in an change the command associated with shutdown to be the standby
function. This woul dbe useful because it would let me shutdown myself, but
the rest of the family could carry on doing what they normally do, but they
would actually be using standby.

Does anyone know if these commands are stored in the registry and if so,
where?

Cheers

Eric

Hello Eric,

You might want to re-post your question in the microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter newsgroup where
the MCE gurus may be able to help you out.

Dear Anando,

I tried both these groups a week or so ago, but just got the 'only allow
logoff' registry hack.

Despite the fact that every other media device only has standby, rather than
turn off, I seem to be alone on this one. It was really one last attempt to
see if the broader XP community had any flash of inspiration.

Thanks for your reply

Eric

Hello Eric,

I am not a regular MCE user, but i tried this a couple of months ago and it did work. I wanted the
power button on the MCE remote to put my machine to hibernate so i went in to the power options
(Right-click on desktop / Properties / Screensaver tab / Power button / Advanced tab) and under the
"When i press the power button on my computer" drop down menu, i selected "Hibernate". In your case
you might want to select "Standby". Now when your family members hit the power button on the MCE
remote, it will put your machine to standby.

Do let me know if this helps you.

Dear Anando

Yes, I have done that and it does work. My problem is not really with my PC,
more with my family! They have been used to using our old windows 2000 PC and
going to the shutdown option off the Start button. I spent years getting them
to do that, rather than just switching it off at the wall! Being just normal
people, they don't really do change, and however much I try to tell them,
they just forget and keep shutting the PC down from the Start menu, rather
than putting it into Standby.

I was really after a way to either remove the Shutdown button so they only
had the Standby button (and pretend to them that it was the same thing), or
re-program the Shutdown button so that it really did a Standby (so they
didn't need to change).

Thanks for your help

Eric

Eric,

I think your best bet would be to remove the Shutdown option from the Start menu as suggested
earlier (use "only allow log-off"). All the best !
