We have a XP Pro laptop on our network. For some reason it requests the
same IP address EVERYTIME it logs onto the network. The only way to get
around this is to give it a static ip. This works in the short run, but I
really need to get it to use DHCP to give it an address.

I even changed the name of the pc, thinking maybe DHCP was tying that ip
addy to the pc's name. I really think its a problem with the laptop. btw,
the wireless nic on the laptop has been disabled.

What part of XP is holding onto this, for it to keep asking for this
address????

Help!!

The server is probably determining the lease time for DHCP addresses.
Changing the computer name wouldn't matter because DHCP addresses are served
based on MAC address.

Typically, if you perform an ipconfig /release then an ipconfig /renew, the
DHCP server will serve the same address it did last time unless the released
address was taken by another device.

I tried ipconfig/ release renew several times and it doesn't work. the pc
still tries to get the same ip.

Ok, what exactly is the problem with the IP address it is getting?

yes, that is what Vagabond Software is trying to say, by default the IP
that is assigned to you will always be assigned to you unless u release
the IP AND while its released someone else grabs a new one.

You don't like that address?

Setup a reservation for the laptop in your DHCP scope...This will tell
DHCP not to give out the address to any other device except the laptop.
