Blank screen on start up

[Cougfamily]

Help,
My computer will not get past the Windows XP(prof)start
up. After the XP runs at start up, the screen goes blank
and my computer has a weird knocking sound. I can't get
the computer to do anything. Is this a "crash"?
Any suggestions?
